How to store, heat and eat our bowls safely, how we work out what's in them, and what we can and can't say about them.
Allergens
The law lists 14 major allergens: celery; cereals containing gluten, such as wheat, rye, barley and oats; crustaceans, such as prawns; eggs; fish; lupin; milk; molluscs, such as mussels; mustard; tree nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts and cashews; peanuts; sesame; soya; and sulphur dioxide and sulphites.
- We list the allergens in every bowl on our order page before you order, and in bold in the ingredients on every label.
- Our kitchen handles all 14 allergens, including peanuts and tree nuts, so we can't promise that any bowl is free from any allergen.
- Check the label every time, even on a bowl you've had before, because recipes and suppliers can change.
- If you have an allergy, email hello@40grams.co.uk before you order. We can't make changes to a bowl for allergies.
- If a personal trainer, gym or shop tells you about our bowls, check the label too. They don't speak for us on allergens.
Nutrition figures
- Every lid shows the protein, kcal, carbs and fat in the bowl as it comes, including its pots.
- We work these figures out from our weighed recipes, using nutrition data for each ingredient. That's one of the methods the law allows. They aren't measured in a lab.
- Every bowl is portioned on scales, but natural ingredients vary, so any one bowl may contain a little more or a little less than its label says.
- Every recipe works out at more than 40 g of protein a bowl. We'll only promise a minimum, such as "at least 45 g of protein", once an independent lab has tested our bowls.
- The 100, once it's available, works out at about 100 g of protein a bowl and about 870 to 910 kcal.
What we say about protein
A food can be called "high protein" when at least 20% of its energy comes from protein. Every one of our bowls meets that test.
These are the health claims the law allows for protein, and the only ones we make:
- Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass.
- Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass.
- Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
Each lid shows how much protein one bowl gives you. Enjoy our bowls as part of a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
Storage and use-by dates
- Keep your bowls in the fridge at 0–5°C. Put them in as soon as you get them home.
- Each bowl's use-by date is 3 days after it's cooked, counting the cook day. A bowl cooked on Monday is used by Wednesday, and one cooked on Thursday by Saturday. The date is on the label. That's why packs of 10 and 15 come in two halves, one on a Monday and one on a Thursday.
- Don't eat a bowl after its use-by date, even if it looks and smells fine.
- We haven't tested our bowls for freezing, so we don't recommend it.
- Bowls from a stockist's fridge have the same use-by date and storage instructions.
Eating cold or hot
Our bowls are made to be eaten cold, straight from the fridge, or heated. Follow the heating instructions on your bowl's label. They work like this:
- Take out the cold pot and the sauce pot.
- Lift a corner of the lid. If the label doesn't say the bowl is microwave-safe, tip the food into a microwave-safe dish first.
- Heat on full power, stirring halfway, until it's steaming hot all the way through. If you have a food thermometer, the middle should reach 75°C.
- Leave it to stand for 1 minute.
- Heat it once only. Don't reheat leftovers.
Heating times are on the label, because they depend on the bowl and your microwave. The 100 is bigger, so it takes longer: follow its label.
Photos
Food photos on our website are serving suggestions. Until our first cook, some of them are computer-made images of our recipes rather than photos of real bowls. We'll replace them with photos of the real thing.
Not medical advice
The information on our website and labels is general information about our food. It isn't medical or dietary advice.
If you have a medical condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or follow a special diet, ask your GP or a registered dietitian whether our bowls are right for you before you order.
